Treatment of Depression with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Depression is a mental health problem that significantly affects quality of life. Although treatment with medication or psychotherapy is commonly used, some patients do not improve, respond slowly, or experience side effects from the medication.

TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) treatment is therefore another safe and interesting option, especially for those who do not respond to conventional treatments.

TMS is the use of low or high-frequency electromagnetic waves to stimulate the brain areas related to emotions, specifically the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which has been found to have reduced activity in patients with depression. It has been extensively studied, with several research studies such as those from the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA Psychiatry) showing that TMS significantly improves depressive symptoms in patients who do not respond to medication, with few side effects such as mild headaches that usually resolve on their own.

TMS treatment does not require surgery or medication and patients can return to their normal daily activities after each session. Each treatment session is brief, making it suitable for those seeking a new, safe option supported by research that does not significantly disrupt daily routines.

If you or someone close to you is facing depression, consulting a doctor about TMS may be an important step toward mental recovery and improved quality of life.
