- Chemicals Normally, in daily life, we encounter various chemicals such as mosquito repellent sprays, insecticides, or chemicals we use daily, which should be avoided and not touched. However, for some mothers who are housewives and cannot avoid detergents, fabric softeners, or dishwashing liquids, observe for allergic reactions such as red rashes, itching, or irritation. You may consider changing brands or switching to baby products. If allergic reactions worsen, it is recommended to consult a doctor.
- Medications Generally, during pregnancy, doctors do not recommend taking medications on your own because many drugs, such as decongestants, can cause the abdominal wall of the baby not to close, resulting in intestines protruding outside. Therefore, if you have a cold, diarrhea, or other symptoms, it is advised to see your antenatal care doctor. The only medications allowed for self-administration are Tylenol or paracetamol. For mothers with underlying diseases, bring your regular medications to consult with your antenatal care doctor as well.
- Tea, coffee, cigarettes, alcohol None of these are recommended! Tea and coffee contain caffeine, which can affect many aspects, such as irritating the stomach or increasing heart rate. Mothers prone to acid reflux will experience worsened stomach irritation. Alcohol can cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome because it passes through the placenta to the fetus, leading to slow growth, low weight, distinctive facial features, brain and nerve cell damage, which may cause behavioral and mental problems, as well as other physical abnormalities such as thin lips and a short philtrum.
- Travel Doctors recommend avoiding travel during the first and third trimesters. The first trimester carries a risk of miscarriage, and during the third trimester, extensive travel may cause stress, muscle inactivity, and potentially premature labor. Therefore, be very cautious about traveling during these periods.
