5 Techniques to Promote Language Development in Toddlers

Parents or caregivers can promote their child’s language development as follows

  1. Be a good example in speaking Parents and caregivers should talk to their child using concise words, clear pronunciation, and easy-to-understand language.
  2. Talk to your child frequently Make time to talk to your child often, especially about things that interest the child.
  3. Do not respond too quickly to the child’s needs based on their gestures If the child shows signs of a need, parents should pause and give the child the opportunity to try to communicate verbally before responding to that need. For example, if the child points to a milk bottle, instead of immediately handing it to the child, parents should pick up the bottle and wait for the child to say the word “milk” before giving it to them.
  4. Read stories to your child and involve them in the reading. Reading stories is one of the best ways to help children develop good language skills. For young children, parents may tell stories using short, simple language, accompanied by gestures or sounds to make it exciting or interesting. As the child grows, parents can tell more complex stories and ask questions about the story periodically. This not only makes reading fun, increases vocabulary, and helps connect words with images, but also encourages analytical thinking.
  5. Avoid raising children with screens Nowadays, raising children with screens such as television, mobile phones, tablets, or computers is popular among modern parents. However, many studies indicate that using these screen media affects language development and may lead to delayed speech or inappropriate communication.

If you suspect your child has speech problems such as delayed speech, unclear speech, repeating words, or stuttering, it is recommended to consult a pediatric developmental and behavioral specialist for evaluation and appropriate speech therapy.
