A disease called “Hernia” can occur to everyone in all ages and genders however according to major proportion of patients, most of them are males. For that reason, many people were mislead to believe it only happens to male in fact this disease can possibly be found in female as well. One of its signs include lumps found prolapsed around the groin or the abdominal area ; they are flexible while being pressed as they can contract to get back inside. However, this is basically assumed as a symptom of “Hernia”
What causes the hernia ?
The disease happens when the internal organs inside the abdomen, such as the small intestine, large intestine or appendicitis move pass the weak spot of abdominal wall to outside resulting in lumps that continuite growing with flexibility that is able to collapse back inside while being pressed.
The most essential factor that contributes symptoms is “older age” because by the older aging the abdominal walls become weak then create space; and when the intestine moves through an area it can look similar to bulging lump protruding from the groin or abdomen clearly.
The next important factor contributing to the disease are activities that increase pressure inside your stomach such as lifting up heavy objects and having constipation as they can significantly lead to “Hernia”
Hernia can occur in many positions …apart from your groin
Areas where the hernia is mostly found are groin and areas where surgical wounds appear after procedure. Sometimes patients have their confusions between 2 diseases: hernia and lymphadenopathy. According to that, their differences can clearly be separated by this observation; for the hernia, in the beginning of its stage the prolapsed lumps are still able to get back inside while being pressed, conversely, for the lymphadenopathy the protruding lumps do not contract back inside while being pressed.
Moreover, type of hernia that occurs in the scrotum it is caused by symptoms that are overlooked and become chronic. Treatments are more detailed apart from that, the disease can also occur in other parts of your body such as the navel, breasts or surgical wounds therefore the best way for protection is when abnormalities are detected meeting a specialized doctor should be done immediately for the most accurate treatment and diagnosis.
Did you know? When a “hernia” should be treated with surgical methods
Currently, treatment by surgery is commonly given to strengthen the abdominal wall since weakness of the wall cause a space where the intestine move through. Taking medicine is ineffective as a treatment and if symptoms are overlooked it may drive to strangulation where the blood is blocked to fully supply the intestine. For that reason, surgery must be done immediately.
Surgery is divided into 2 types as follows:
-
- An open surgery (Open Inguinal Hernia Repair) a procedure that gives 2-3 inches opened wounds to patients
Advantage : a fundamental surgical process that every surgeon knows and be able to provide to patients, cost of treatment is low therefore everyone can receive it without hesitation.
The disadvantage : time for recovery is about 1-2 weeks, patients who have hernia on the left side and right side wounds after procedure may appear. However, those being overweight may have more risk of wound infection than those having an average body weight.
-
- Laparoscopic surgery ( Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair) a procedure that cause three surgical wounds after procedure; one has around 1 or 2 centimeters in length and another two wounds have their length about 0.5 cm.
Advantage : it gives patients less pain compared to the first approach (open surgery) and reduces the risk of wound infections moreover, patients can recover faster than open surgery. Furthermore, hernias on both, left and right side, can be under procedure at the same time without any additional surgical wounds after.
Disadvantage : Cost is higher than the open surgery and may not be suitable for those having problems with respiratory systems and bad risk during anaesthetic provision.
Considering the pros and cons it may approve that laparoscopic surgery is a new treatment comes with good safety for patients. Every decision is based on a doctor’s discretion and patients corporation. And for the most benefits to patients it would be better to reach a doctor as soon as certain abnormalities are seen.
