“Chronic cough with phlegm, feels like having a cold all the time” may not just be a common cold but could be a sign of “Chronic Bronchitis (Chronic Bronchitis)” a respiratory disease commonly found in smokers or those exposed to polluted environments. If left untreated, it may develop into Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which is severe and may require the use of a ventilator.
What is Chronic Bronchitis?
Chronic Bronchitis (Chronic Bronchitis) is a condition where the bronchial tubes become inflamed, causing the bronchial lining to thicken and produce more mucus, leading to chronic cough, phlegm, and difficulty breathing.
It is diagnosed as “chronic” when the patient has symptoms of cough and phlegm for at least 3 months/year and continuously for 2 years or more
Symptoms of Chronic Bronchitis
Although similar to symptoms of a cold or allergies, this disease is different and may progressively worsen if untreated.
- Chronic cough, especially in the morning or upon waking up
- Regular white, yellow, or green phlegm
- Difficulty breathing, wheezing
- Chest tightness, easily fatigued even with light activities
- Feeling tired all the time
Causes of Chronic Bronchitis
- Smoking is the main cause
- Inhalation of dust, toxic smoke, air pollution(including PM2.5) or chemicals from the workplace
- Repeated respiratory infections
- Allergies or other chronic respiratory problems
If Chronic Bronchitis is left untreated for a long time, it may lead to
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Increased risk of recurrent infections in the lungs and bronchi
- Reduced quality of life due to easy fatigue and disrupted daily routines
Treatment and Self-Care Guidelines
- See a doctor for diagnosis which may include chest X-rays, lung function tests (Spirometry) or CT scans(CT scan) for accurate diagnosis
- Behavioral modification
- Quit smoking
- Avoid areas with smoke, dust, chemicals, or PM2.5
- Use a mask to protect against dust
- Medical treatment
- Use bronchodilators or anti-inflammatory medications
- Some cases may require regular inhalers or oxygen therapy
- Get vaccinated for influenza and pneumonia prevention
- Lung rehabilitation
- Exercise regularly
- Practice deep breathing exercises to strengthen respiratory muscles
Chronic Bronchitis (Chronic Bronchitis) may start with symptoms similar to a common cold, but if there is chronic cough with phlegm lasting several months you should see a doctor promptly because if left untreated, it may affect the respiratory system long-term and significantly reduce quality of life.
