The human visual system is complex and continuously developing. If abnormalities interfere with the development of the visual system, especially from birth to 9 years old, and are not properly and promptly corrected or treated, it may affect long-term vision or eventually cause visual impairment. Therefore, visual abnormalities in children are important for parents to observe regularly. The basic testing methods are as follows:
Vision Testing Methods for Preschool Children
1. Lea Chart or Lea symbols

Visual acuity test using pictures of circles, squares, houses, and apples
2. Allen chart

Visual acuity test using cartoon graphic images such as cake, telephone, airplane, house, car, tree, horse, hand, bear, and bird. In the test, the images in each row gradually decrease in size. Therefore, if the child is familiar with these images before the test, it will increase the effectiveness and reliability of the test.
3. HOTV chart

Recommendations
1. All these images are used for vision testing in preschool children.
2. Children should be familiarized with these images beforehand to know what each picture represents. In case the child refuses to respond, matching identical images can be used to assist in the assessment.
3. Conduct the test by asking questions, with the image size gradually decreasing.
4. For cooperative children, test each eye separately.
5. If the child normally wears glasses, they should wear them during the test.
6. This test is not a vision measurement but only a preliminary vision assessment.
Regardless of the testing method used, or if parents notice abnormalities or suspect their child’s vision may be abnormal, please do not hesitate to take your child to see a doctor for a thorough examination. Good vision and eye health help children develop fully and reduce the risk of future eye health problems.
