The brain is like other organs in the body. If it is rarely used or only faces the same problems every day, relying on habitual skills, over time our brain may deteriorate and start to think slowly, act slowly, and become forgetful. Try methods that help train the brain and memory to get fit again by
- Doing daily routines with the non-dominant hand, such as if you usually brush your teeth with your right hand, try brushing with your left hand instead, or practice writing with your left hand. At first, it may be awkward, but believe it or not, this method helps the less active hemisphere of the brain that controls body movements to get some exercise and perform its functions.
- Looking at everyday objects upside down. Instead of viewing things vertically as usual, try changing your perspective by looking at them upside down. This allows the brain to process and interpret what the eyes see in a more complex way, exercising the brain and alleviating concerns about brain atrophy.
- Playing coin guessing games to test brain ability by placing coins in your pocket, feeling them with your hand, and guessing what the coin is. Since the brain distinguishes objects based on visual input and analyzes their characteristics through touch, this natural mechanism repeats until it becomes a habit. This method helps increase brain folds.
- Trying new routes for travel. If you drive or take the same route to work every day, the brain becomes sluggish due to familiarity. Changing the route occasionally helps the brain think more, observe changes in the surroundings, and practice memorizing new routes.
- Playing games that require thinking and analysis, such as IQ test books, jigsaw puzzles, Scrabble, Sudoku, chess, or checkers with friends. These games stimulate the brain to work and develop continuously, helping reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
- Smelling different fragrances every week. When waking up, we usually smell tea or coffee every morning until the brain memorizes these scents well. Try changing the scent to stimulate the brain easily by placing refreshing essential oils on the bedside table and switching scents weekly. This gives the brain a chance to learn and remember new smells.
- Switching the placement of frequently used items. Items you use regularly are memorized so well that you can find them with your eyes closed. Try rearranging their places so the brain has to memorize and reach for them in different spots. This simple change increases brain and sensory activity.
- Reading books aloud. Normally, we read silently in our minds, so the brain areas activated by reading aloud rarely get to show their potential. Changing to reading aloud switches brain functions and activates the parts that are often neglected.
