Workplace hazards for expectant mothers

The 40-week period of physical and mental changes in pregnant mothers should be closely monitored. The most common dangers for pregnant women are vibrations and impacts.

  • If the work involves running fast or experiencing vibrations, it should be avoided as it is harmful to pregnancy.
  • If the work requires sitting or standing for long periods, it is not necessarily harmful, but prolonged sitting can cause back pain not only for pregnant mothers but also for the general population. Proper seating posture should be arranged, with back cushions to support, or even changing positions frequently to avoid sitting in the same posture for too long.
  • Standing for long periods can cause swollen feet, which can be relieved by soaking feet in warm water to help ease pain and reduce swelling.
  • Photocopiers, computer screens, and microwave ovens do not affect the fetus and can be used normally. However, prolonged staring at a computer screen all day may affect eyesight. It is advisable to take regular breaks and use screen filters or glasses that block light.
  • Pregnant mothers should be especially cautious about X-rays and CT scans because the radiation from these machines may affect the fetus. If possible, these should be avoided.
  • Pregnant mothers should not wear high heels. Wearing high heels increases the risk of falls or accidents, which can be dangerous for both the mother and the fetus. As the pregnancy progresses and the belly grows, muscle tension and injuries may occur.
  • Pregnant women should not ride motorcycles because the vibrations from rough roads can cause impacts or falls from the motorcycle. Therefore, it should be strictly avoided.
  • Working night shifts does not affect the fetus but can affect the mother if she does not get enough rest.
