How should the elderly eat vegetarian food... to gain both merit and good health

In the Thai calendar, the Vegetarian Festival lasts about 9 days, usually falling in the 9th or 10th month. Vegetarianism means abstaining from all kinds of meat, including animal-derived processed products. It is a way to create merit and avoid serious diseases affecting the body. Although vegetarian food is healthy, if not eaten according to nutritional principles, it can also negatively impact health.

Did you know? Elderly people eating a lot of fiber… may experience bloating

Elderly people should be especially careful about their diet because they often have underlying issues such as bloating and indigestion due to aging. Therefore, eating too many high-fiber vegetables and fruits can worsen bloating problems. It is recommended that elderly people avoid consuming too many high-fiber vegetables and fruits, including raw vegetables like cabbage and lettuce. If they want to eat them, they should be cooked first.

Avoid foods high in starch, fat, and overly sweet or salty flavors

For elderly people who like to eat vegetarian stir-fried or fried dishes or those containing starch and fried in a large amount of oil, their bodies will receive excessive carbohydrates and fats. This can lead to weight gain and problems with high blood lipids, which may cause other health issues. Therefore, elderly people with chronic diseases such as diabetes should be cautious about eating foods high in starch or overly sweet and fatty flavors. Similarly, elderly people with kidney disease should avoid salty vegetarian foods.

Eating vegetarian food for the elderly should provide complete and beneficial nutrients in appropriate amounts. Focus on eating vegetarian dishes that are boiled, steamed, grilled, or spicy salads, and avoid fried or stir-fried foods. Regular consumption of vegetables and fruits will help elderly people maintain good physical and mental health throughout the Vegetarian Festival.
