Ovarian stimulation (Ovarian Stimulation) is an important step in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process, aiming to stimulate the ovaries to produce more eggs than usual in one menstrual cycle, allowing multiple eggs to be collected to increase the chances of pregnancy. Therefore, proper and disciplined care during this period is extremely important.
If you are preparing for this step or currently undergoing ovarian stimulation injections, here are 10 important guidelines you need to know to achieve the best results and ensure your health safety
1. Always inject ovarian stimulation medication on time
Injections should be given on time every day. If delayed, it can be postponed by no more than 1–2 hours. However, the “final injection” (Trigger Shot) must be administered exactly at the time prescribed by the doctor because egg retrieval is performed 34–36 hours after this injection to obtain eggs at the optimal time for fertilization.
2. Do not self-correct if the injection is wrong
If you forget to inject, mix the medication incorrectly, inject at the wrong time, or experience abnormal symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, or dizziness, do not search the internet and make decisions on your own. Contact your doctor immediately because the medication directly affects egg development.
3. You can continue taking vitamins as usual
You can take folic acid and other vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, and astaxanthin without stopping the medication unless specifically instructed by your doctor.
4. Increase protein intake in meals
High-protein foods such as egg whites, tofu, fish, various meats, fresh milk, and soy milk help nourish the body and reduce the risk of complications such as bloating or abdominal tightness after egg retrieval.
5. Eat cooked, clean, and easily digestible food
Choosing safe food helps reduce the risk of diarrhea or constipation, which may interfere with the injection process.
6. Avoid foods that may upset the stomach
Fermented foods and spicy foods should be avoided during the injection process to reduce the chance of diarrhea or indigestion.
7. Maintain good health
Avoid illnesses such as colds or coughs because during egg retrieval, anesthesia may be required. Being sick increases the risk of complications such as respiratory infections.
8. Avoid heavy exercise and sexual intercourse
Strenuous exercise or sexual intercourse may cause ovarian torsion or increase the risk of other complications from ovarian enlargement. Therefore, adequate rest is recommended during this period.
9. Rest for at least 2–3 days after egg retrieval
After egg retrieval, you may experience bloating, abdominal tightness, or mild pain. If severe symptoms occur, such as severe abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, or vaginal bleeding, see a doctor immediately.
10. The male partner should abstain from ejaculation 3–5 days before egg retrieval day
To ensure the sperm is most concentrated and of the best quality for fertilization, ejaculation should be avoided for at least 3–5 days before this important appointment.
In vitro fertilization is a process that requires cooperation between doctors and patients, especially during the ovarian stimulation injections, which are crucial for treatment success. If you take care of your health, strictly follow the instructions, and regularly consult your doctor, your chances of pregnancy will definitely increase.
