What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertillization (IVF) is technology that help couples who are facing infertility problem by mixing both egg and sperm from outside the body in laboratory. Later, the embryo will be sent through the uterine cavity to create a possibility of pregnancy.
Spouse Affected by These Following Factors may Required the IVF Procedure in the future:
-
- Those women with Endometriosis, pelvic fibrosis, obstructed uterine, delayed ovulation and certain conditions or diseases that cause abnormal hormones.
- Men who have problems with quality of sperm such as low amounts, abnormal shape and movement.
Before Proceeding The IVF
Spouse must be screened to find the exact cause of infertility. For males, they will need to take a sperm test, however if they are smoker then such an behaviour is not allowed during this time . Moreover, woman will have to receive pelvic examination and ultrasound for uterine cancer screening. For those, who are overweight, doctor will recommend them to lose some weight before processing.
Spouses will receive explanation about the process as well as success rate and risk. After that they have to sign a document to consent doctor to proceed.
During Procedure
-
- Egg stimulation will be started after seeing a doctor, blood test provided to check hormone levels along with ultrasound and hormone taking in order to stimulate the ovary on day 2 or day 3 of a month. Next, doctor will appoint a time for ultrasound to observe egg development and its growth. Later, hormone level screening will be done for medicine adjustment which takes around 8-10 days.
-
- Egg Storage: After egg stimulation using hormone, eggs storage will be made. The doctor then will collect the egg using needle and ultrasound. Anesthesia will be applied to prevent a person from pain, this process takes about 20-30 minutes.
-
- The fertilization in male requires storage of sperm. The healthy sperm will be used for being fertilized in lab. For those having low amount of sperm may not create a success. So, sperm selection will be made without waiting for fertilization, this method called (ICSI,Intracytoplasmic Sperm injection)
-
- Embryo culture: it will be processed after the fertilization. The embryo will still kept in the lab until the cell starts to divide itself into 6-8 cells, which takes about 3 days to grow. It may also take about 5 days or more to reaches blastocyst stage.
- Embryo Transferation: This procedure does not require analgesia or sleeping pills. The embryo will be transferred to the uterine cavity using ultrasound to determine the optimal position. In general, the embryo will be transferred after 3 days or 5 days counted after the fertilization occurs. The procedure takes about 30 minutes.
What Patients should do after IVF Procedure
-
- Rest about 1-2 hours then go back home to rest for 12-24 hours.
-
- Move the body to change a position or posture slightly, a person is not allowed to flex the abdomen or do several postures that may hurt their stomach.

Factor That Help IVF Success
-
- It is based on the stimulation of ovulation.
-
- Embryo Strength/Health Condition.
-
- Age: women aged 40 has lower chance for the embryo to survive than those who are younger.
-
- Goold Health Condition that woman must be prepared.
-
- Financial Support: The procedure requires repetitive process which may cost a lot of money.
- We need to know that the success rate of IVF process is about 40 percent per each procedure.
“Complication” that may occur
-
- Multi-pregnancy, it happens due to 1-3 the embryos that are embedded inside the uterus to increase a chance of pregnancy. The embryos then grow and create Multi-pregnancy in a mother.
-
- The ovary overresponds to hormone as it is stimulated to produce more numbers of egg. This later results in pain because more water produced in the abdominal cavity.
-
- Miscarriage that may occur during the pregnancy.
- Infection that may also occur during pregnancy.
Today, complications rarely occur due to detecting from doctors that provide great treatment and prevention to patients.
The Difference between IVF and GIFT
Gift is a traditional method of reproductive technology, mixing sperm and eggs in the oviduct to create fertilization. However, what we should know is that the IVF creates the fertilization outside the body using method called Embryo culture. The method takes around 3-5 days before moving the embryo to the uterine cavity.
New Alternative for Spouse
At present, there are many factors that contribute to the infertility. One of them is getting married in older age(35). Since egg quality could be low part along with other factors such as alcohol, cigarette, and stress may increase and impact pregnancy due to they are part of reasons why couple have infertility.
The Infertility happens to spouse who are married for more than one year they also regularly have sex 3-4 times a week without contraception which pregnancy does not happen. It indicates that there is a problem known as infertility within the couple. However, if the spouse concerns whether they will have a child or not.
