But did you know that one thing amateur athletes like us who push ourselves to exercise until sweating liters as part of our lifestyle—and may not even realize it—is that we are not only losing sweat from playing sports, but we may also be losing the balance of essential minerals in the body that are excreted along with sweat, known as electrolytes.
How are electrolyte levels related to exercise?
Electrolytes are essential minerals in the body that affect muscle function, including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride. All these essential minerals work together to control muscle contraction, transport nutrients to cells, help regulate water balance in the body, and even the heart’s rhythm. Electrolytes therefore directly impact the body’s performance.
At the same time, when we exercise, the body’s mechanism stimulates sweating to reduce body temperature and prevent excessive heat accumulation. We lose these electrolytes in large amounts along with sweat, especially sodium and chloride, which are minerals found outside the cells. Therefore, people who exercise intensely for long periods or athletes have a chance of losing electrolytes, leading to electrolyte imbalance.

How to prevent electrolyte imbalance when exercising intensely
Electrolyte imbalance in the body can occur in various forms, either from excessive water loss or excessive water intake that rapidly dilutes electrolytes in the body. We can replenish electrolytes lost through heavy sweating by drinking electrolyte-containing beverages, sports drinks, or eating foods rich in minerals such as sodium and magnesium to replace the minerals lost with sweat.
Health check for athletes or those who exercise intensely
Athletes who sweat continuously for long periods to prevent electrolyte imbalance, which may cause abnormal muscle and heart function or acute severe symptoms from dehydration, can have blood tests to measure electrolyte balance in the body. This will reveal the balance of essential minerals such as sodium, calcium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, and phosphate. Additionally, an electrocardiogram (ECG) can be performed to check heart function for irregular or rapid heartbeat, which can also indicate electrolyte imbalance in the body.
