After being in a dark place for a long time... how should you adjust the functioning of your eyes?

When the eyes are in the dark for a long time or in low light for an extended period, the adaptation of the retinal cells slows down. When exposed to bright light again, it is necessary to gradually allow the retinal cells to adjust, starting with exposing the eyes to dim light during the first week, then gradually increasing the brightness until normal vision is restored. The adaptation of retinal cells varies for each person, depending on…

  1. The health and strength of each person’s eyes differ at various ages because younger people adapt to light better than older people, as their retinal cells are less deteriorated.
  2. If there is an infection or a deficiency in nutrients or hydration, the adaptation of retinal cells will slow down, requiring more time for recovery than usual.

For initial care, sunglasses or hats should be worn, combined with staying in dim environments first, and gradually increasing the light brightness as the retinal cells can slowly adjust to the light.

Recommendations After Being in the Dark for a Long Time

  1. Avoid using your eyes for reading, computer use, or phone use for at least 1-2 weeks.
  2. Avoid looking at sunlight and bright lights for at least 2 weeks.
  3. Get enough sleep, about 8 hours a day.
  4. Eat foods and fruits that provide vitamins for the retina, such as green leafy vegetables, egg yolks, citrus fruits and berries, almonds, carrots, fatty fish, etc., and drink plenty of water to help retinal cells adjust faster.
