Lumbar spinal canal stenosis

Lumbar Degenerative Spinal Canal Stenosis

Commonly found in people over 40 years old and more frequently in women. The cause of the disease may be congenital or develop later as narrowing occurs, which worsens with age. The most common cause is spinal canal narrowing from the spinal joints compressing the nerves. Patients usually present with the following symptoms:

  • Heavy pain in the lower back and hips
  • Severe pain in the calves and legs, worsening with prolonged walking
  • Increased pain when bending backward, with relief when resting and bending forward
  • Sometimes symptoms can be severe enough to cause loss of bowel and bladder control (Cauda equina compression syndrome)

Examination and Treatment

Doctors will perform a physical examination, X-rays, and additional MRI scans. Treatment can be surgical or non-surgical, depending on the doctor’s judgment. The main reason for surgery in lumbar spinal canal stenosis is nerve root compression. Surgery is performed to relieve pressure within the lumbar spine, and sometimes spinal fusion is necessary to stabilize the lumbar spine.

Self-care to Avoid Back Pain from Spinal Disease

  • Exercise regularly, as consistent exercise strengthens the muscles and ligaments of the spine
  • Maintain proper posture when sitting, walking, and standing, such as sitting upright with back support and avoiding slouching
  • Control weight to avoid excessive load on the spine
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages
